To do so, they started increasing the screen-to-body ratio of the phones, which is a flat form factor with a display on one side of the smartphone. Now the companies are moving towards a more improved form factor that would utilize the unusable portion of the phones, i.e., the rear surface and the phone&#8217;s sides. These were previously used to place buttons and switches with fixed functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apple recently filed a patent application (<a href=\"http:\/\/appft.uspto.gov\/netacgi\/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1&amp;Sect2=HITOFF&amp;p=1&amp;u=\/netahtml\/PTO\/srchnum.html&amp;r=1&amp;f=G&amp;l=50&amp;d=PG01&amp;s1=20190324503.PGNR.\">US20190324503A1<\/a>), which describes such a portable electronic device with a wraparound display and a more efficient mechanism for presenting visual content and functionality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"831\" height=\"498\" src=\"https:\/\/www.citiusminds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AppleFold.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.citiusminds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AppleFold.png 831w, https:\/\/www.citiusminds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AppleFold-300x180.png 300w, https:\/\/www.citiusminds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AppleFold-768x460.png 768w, https:\/\/www.citiusminds.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/AppleFold-640x384.png 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 831px) 100vw, 831px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The wrap-around display drastically increases the available display area that can be used to display icons, data, images, video, etc. Even when they have filed for a patent, Apple might not produce such a phone anytime soon. Recently\u00a0 Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have launched foldable smartphones Galaxy Fold, Huawei Mate X, and Razr. Apple generally likes to learn from others\u2019 mistakes and only mass-produces what is sure to be successful.
